S. Sloan Kory
Since the age of 5, Sloan has been fascinated by martial arts. In Orange County, North Carolina, he began learning Kong Soo Do, a Korean Karate style, earning accolades at state competitions. His move to New York City at 7 shifted the focus to academics, yet in college, the allure of martial arts returned through Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art. After two years of practicing, its emphasis on dance left him wanting to train a more spiritual and pragmatic martial art.
During the 2010s he relocated to Oakland, California, immersing himself in Shaolin Kung Fu and Chigong under the guidance of the Shaolin Monk, Master Shi Yanqi (now known as Master Long Yuan). He helped Master Yuan to establish Dragon Rhythm Shaolin Kung Fu in Fremont, California, winning numerous competitions and teaching young students who excelled in the San Francisco Bay Area martial arts scene.
A setback struck in 2016 when a snowboarding mishap left Sloan with a serious wrist injury. This forced a hiatus from martial arts, but it did not stop his adventurous journey. In 2020, he embarked on a sailing expedition, navigating his 35-foot Catalina from San Diego, eventually finding himself enamored with Mexico City during a business layover. It echoed the energy of New York City and spurred him to lay down roots there.
In 2021, while in Mexico City he reconnected with Chinese Wushu at Wuji center under Maestro Leonel Pedraza, the 2017 Mexican and Pan-American Champion of traditional Kung Fu. There he began learning Wudang Longmen Kungfu, Tai Chi, and Chigong. His experience however was not confined to land; he continued his training while navigating the Pacific coastline of Mexico, aboard his sailboat, merging the tranquility of the sea with his martial arts pursuit until he concluded his trip in February of 2022 on the Oaxaca coast.
In 2024, Sloan embarked on a pilgrimage to Wudang Mountain, training under the Master Yuan Xiu Gang and his lead disciple, Master Sang Wen Gao. Their intensive Traditional Wudang training pushed Sloan further in pursuing martial arts excellence and Taoist mastery, a sojourn he now regularly continues in China.
In 2022, Sloan chose to divide his time between Mexico and Barcelona, Spain, sharing his knowledge by teaching, training, and competing internationally. His focus on Taoist philosophy and meditation has lead him to host Tai Chi and Kung Fu retreats around the world.
